Presentation: Firefighter Sleep, The Science of Schedules, Start Times, and Alerting Systems
This presentation examines how shift schedules, start times, and alerting systems shape firefighters’ sleep, health, and performance. It summarizes the operational sleep challenge in fire and EMS, key sleep and circadian principles, and what sleep looks like across work and recovery days. Applied findings on shift schedules and shift start time are reviewed, followed by evidence informed strategies to optimize sleep through alerting system considerations plus behavioral, occupational, and station environment modifications, including sleeping quarters design.
