Chief Jennifer Smith Named First Female President of NC Association of Fire Chiefs

New Hanover County Deputy Fire Chief Jennifer Smith has been elected as the first female president of the North Carolina Association of Fire Chiefs (NCAFC). Her historic appointment marks a significant milestone for the organization and underscores Chief Smith’s leadership and dedication to the fire service.


Chief Smith began her career in New Hanover County more than two decades ago and has steadily advanced through roles in operations, training, administration and executive leadership. Under her leadership, the department has many accomplishments, including


  • Guided the department through the process to achieve international accreditation, reinforcing a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.

  • Led the creation of the strategic plan, anchoring operations in data-driven analysis.

  • Launched a high school firefighter program and apprenticeship pathway to diversify recruitment and retain top talent.

“I am deeply honored to serve as president of the North Carolina Association of Fire Chiefs,” said Chief Smith. “This opportunity allows the NCAFC to continue to champion for innovation, resilience, and collaboration across our state’s fire service. Together, we will strengthen departments, support fire service leaders, and advance the fire service across North Carolina.”


With over 26 years of progressive leadership in fire and emergency services, Chief Smith holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration, and is a graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program. She holds dual designations as a Chief Fire Officer and Chief Training Officer. Chief Smith is currently participating in Cohort 13 of the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ Fire Service Executive Development Institute.


An instructor for the Fire Protection Technology and Emergency Management curriculum at Cape Fear Community College, she also serves on the North Carolina Fire and Rescue Certification Board. She also serves as the second vice president of the Southeastern Association of Fire Chiefs and is a past president of the Eastern Carolina Firefighters Association.


Smith also volunteers as a leader for area scout troops and serves in many council roles for the Cape Fear Council Boy Scouts of America.


She enjoys spending time with her family and resides in Leland with her husband Mack and their three children.
