The Fire Investigator analyzes fire caused by applying scientific principles.  Ability to conduct investigations in commercial properties, residential structures, automobiles, boats, and heavy equipment.

 

The Fire Investigator will be responsible for scheduling and visiting sites, gathering and analyzing data, collection of evidence and research.

 

Requirements:

 

  • Bachelors Degree in fire science or criminal justice would be desirable.
  • Must be familiar with NFPA 921 and NFPA 1033;
  • Must have CFI and/or CFEI certification or be qualified to test for both within six months.  Must be qualified to become a private investigator and hold a valid Florida Class “C” license;
  • Must possess excellent communication skills.   The ability to communicate both verbally and in writing is essential.  Deals with individuals on all levels of insurance claim assignments.  Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to speak to groups of people may be required;
  • Capable of writing detailed reports explaining fire scene findings;
  • Must have basic computer skills and be capable of digitally photographing fire scenes and making site drawings;
  • Extensive knowledge of fire science and building construction is a must;
  • Must be qualified as an expert witness and be prepared to offer testimony in cases involving fires and explosions;
  • Must be capable of visiting sites and handling all phases of fire/explosion investigations with little or no supervision.

The City of Statesville’s Fire Department is a growing, progressive department, located in the Charlotte metro area of Piedmont, N.C.  Statesville’s fourth fire station is scheduled for completion in the next several months which will require the employment of additional personnel to join this exciting time of growth.  Currently, the SFD provides emergency services to more than 27,000 residents in a 22-square mile area with a staff of 57 fire suppression personnel.

 

Firefighters are responsible for performing intermediate protective service work in fire suppression including rescue, entry, ventilating and salvage work.  Must possess  a valid N.C. Driver’s License.  N.C. FFII Certification and EMT or ability to obtain within 12 month probationary period required. Must obtain and maintain Hazmat Orientation Level Certification, Medical Responder Certification and SFD Driver/Operator Level III Certification.  Must provide a copy of a Career Readiness Certification, silver level or higher through any NC Community College Graduation from high school or GED, firefighting experience considered, but not required, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills & abilities. Fire Captain City of Hendersonville

Description:

An employee in this position is responsible for performing supervisory and technical work in fire suppression, emergency rescue, fire inspection, fire investigation, and fire personnel training activities. Considerable independence, judgment, and ability to make effective decisions under pressure is required in all aspects of work, particularly in directing staff in incident response.  Exercises direct supervision over subordinate personnel on assigned shift.  Work is performed under general supervision of Fire Chief and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and written reports concerning the quality and effectiveness of incident response.

Examples of Duties:

·         Respond to fire alarms as a company officer, and as such assume responsibility for the supervision, performance, and safety of assigned personnel on the scene of an emergency incident. Direct firefighting and rescue operations until relieved by a superior officer. Supervise and assist in first aid at an emergency incident.

 

  • Investigate hazardous material leaks; write code violations; coordinate investigation efforts.

 

  • Prepare all reports, forms, recommendations, and other required administrative procedures of the company.

 

  • Supervise and participate in the inspection of buildings and installations for fire hazards and fire safety systems as required by state laws and city ordinances.

 

  • Performs supervisory related tasks such as employee coaching, performance review, and disciplinary matters.  Identify the fire training needs of company personnel including such areas as the driving and operation of equipment; ensure that the necessary training is provided. Enforce all city and departmental rules and make recommendations to superior officers. Participates and direct cleaning of quarters, equipment, and apparatus at fire station.

 

  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other city employees and the public using principles of good customer service.

Minimal Requirements:

Must be able to physically perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing.

Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must possess visual acuity to size up the color, volume, and extent of fire involvement in structures, to operate heavy fire apparatus in emergency situations, and to prepare records and reports.

Desirable Education and Experience

Graduation from a community college with a degree in fire science or related field supplemented by advanced courses and seminars in fire service; and considerable experience of an increasingly responsible nature in the fire service; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Special Requirements

·       Possession of a valid class B North Carolina driver's license.

  • Possession of NFPA Firefighter II certificate.
  • Possesion of Level III Fire Inspector
  • Advanced Hazmat
