General Information

The City of Hampton is a picturesque waterfront community
bordered by Joint Base Langley - Eustis and the beautiful historic
Fort Monroe. The City is steeped in rich history and boasts many
notable “firsts,” which include being America’s first continuous
English speaking settlement, providing the first organized
teaching of African-Americans, and being the first training
ground for U.S. Astronauts. The City, which was established
in 1610 has 136,000 residents, occupies 53 square miles
and is part of the Southeastern Virginia region known as
Hampton Roads.

Hampton Fire & Rescue is a combination department with
volunteer roots dating back to 1884. Today, the department
has over 250 career personnel supplemented by a large
contingent of volunteers under the direction of Fire Chief
David E. Layman.

Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are provided by personnel from 10 fire stations strategically located throughout the city’s borders. An 11th station is set to open in April of this year, to improve coverage to the northwest quadrant of the city.

Enjoy your stay in Hampton and feel free to visit any of our fire facilities.
